Exploring Habitats and Biodiversity

How can nature centers, zoos, and museums encourage families to care for the habitats around them? One answer lies in an integrated approach to media that sparks initial interest with highly engaging interactives, and then extends learning over time with opportunities for action in the real world.

Our approach is to focus on the family as the central learning group, and look for ways of encouraging parent/child collaboration both within the exhibit, and after the visit at home via the Web. When parents are provided easy to use "next step" resources at the right time, they are more likely to continue their learning and to take steps to conserve critical habitats.

And when teachers are provided easy-to-integrate resources connected to national standards, they are more likely create moments when students build connections to local habitats.
